Hayden, ID - On 11/01/19, at approximately 12:49 pm, multiple units from Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office along with Idaho State Police and Coeur d’Alene Police Department responded to the area of W. Hayden Ave. and N. Atlas Rd. for a possible Domestic Dispute.
While enroute, it was reported a female subject had jumped out of a moving vehicle which was traveling northbound on Atlas Rd. As the female jumped from the vehicle, she yelled at a citizen passing by to call 911.
Units arrived a short time later, and contacted the victim who advised the white male suspect; later identified as 34 year old Mathew R. Mclean of Hayden had threatened to kill her in the vehicle with a large knife. Mclean fled the scene on foot westbound from the area of the passenger car the two were traveling in possibly behind some buildings southwest of the incident location. Units from the respective agencies set a perimeter and began looking for Mclean. At 1:03 pm a Safety Hold was called in to Atlas Elementary School for their students and staff to hold in place, and units from CDAPD responded there to provide security for students and staff.
A few minutes later an alert citizen and his wife were traveling eastbound on Hayden Ave. west of the incident in their vehicle and observed the suspect emerge on to the roadway west of the incident location. The citizen alerted one of the patrol units on scene and advised a male acting suspiciously (Mclean) had just walked on to Hayden Ave. from the south near some local businesses.
Mclean was detained by units on scene and ultimately arrested for Aggravated Assault. The Safety Hold for Atlas Elementary was lifted at 1:13 pm. Although no injuries were sustained, Fire/EMS from Northern Lakes Fire responded for a patient evaluation on Mclean due to him complaining of a medical condition unrelated to the incident.
The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office extends its appreciation and thanks to all citizens in our community, but especially in regards to today’s incident where the citizen saw something and said something.
