[ARCHIVED] Spokane Valley Man Drowns In Spokane River

The following information is preliminary and subject to change as the incident is currently under investigation.  Events in this press release may change as the investigation progresses.

Coeur d’ Alene, Idaho:  In the afternoon hours of July 1, 2023, Kootenai County Sheriff marine deputies were flagged down on the Coeur d’ Alene river, near North Idaho College Beach, regarding a male who was possibly drowning. A marine deputy entered the water and was able to quickly locate the victim. The victim was brought to shore where Coeur d’ Alene Fire Department and Kootenai County Sheriff deputies began life saving measures.  

The victim, identified as Ismail Bilmece, a 35-year-old male from Spokane Valley, Washington was transported to KH where he was pronounced deceased.  

Sheriff Norris sends his condolences to Bilmece’s family during this difficult time. Sheriff Norris also said, “I am very proud of our marine team and commends the team for their heroic acts, placing themselves in harm’s way while making every effort to rescue and revive Bilmece”.  

The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office would like to remind the community to recreate safely as you enjoy this Fourth of July weekend.
