[ARCHIVED] KCSO Responds to Plane Crash at Coeur d'Alene Airport

Hayden, ID:  UPDATE - The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office received some updated information on the plane crash that happened earlier today at the CDA Airport.  Originally, it was reported that the landing gear was not down, however all the landing gear was down.  One of the wheels failed causing the plane to slide down the runway resulting in the crash.  Again no one was injured and the FAA has taken over the investigation.

Hayden, ID:  Kootenai County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a plane crash that happened at the Coeur d’ Alene Airport.

On Thursday June 18, 2020, at around 2:00 P.M., deputies received a report of an airplane crash at the CDA Airport.  It was reported there were no injuries as a result of the crash.  Deputies arrived on scene and observed a Cessna airplane in the grass along a runway.

Deputies contacted the two occupants of the aircraft who were identified as Clyde C. Stemberg a 30 year old male from Kalispell, Montana and Anthony H. Simental a 30 year old male from Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.  Clyde, who was a pilot in training, was on approach to land the plane and lowered the landing gear.  A light for the landing gear flickered indicating the landing gear may not have been deployed.  Anthony, the instructor, took over controls and attempted the land the plane without landing gear.

The plane contacted the runway and finally came to a rest after sliding on the runway and rotating due to the wing catching the grass.

No one was injured in the accident.  Alcohol and/or drugs was not a factor in the accident. The plane sustained significant damage and some lights on the runway were damaged.

A representative from the Federal Aviation Administration responded to the scene and took over the investigation.
